HPLC and mass spectrometry often appear side by side on peptide lab reports, but they do different jobs. Reverse-phase HPLC with UV detection separates sample components and records their signals. Intact-mass spectrometry checks whether the observed ions fit the expected molecular mass. MS/MS can add fragment-level evidence about amino-acid sequence.
The results are most useful when they identify the same submitted sample and remain attached to the methods and quality-control data used to produce them. The two results are not interchangeable.
